Search for Missing....... Cows?

Postby Ron Spiker » Tue Mar 29, 2011 7:01 am

A local beef farmer called the other day saying that several of his calves had gotten out of the fence and they were unable to find them with the ATVs. He wanted to know if I could help. OF COURSE!! So my 13-year old son "the spotter" and I started looking over his farm and zig-zagged back and forth over about a 3 mile area in the direction they said the cows had initially headed. After 20 minutes or so my spotter pointed down into a section of woods. (Our intercom wasn't working so we were using hand signals and trying to write notes on paper.) I circled around and sure enough, there were about 8 calves huddled together in a circle, hiding in the woods. I saw the farmer's son on his ATV riding along a field so I landed nearby to direct him to the section of woods that the calves were hiding. He drove back and forth along the edge of woods and still couldn't see them, so I picked up to 100' or so above the trees to see again exactly where they were, dropped back down and pointed to him where they were hiding. He found them and called the others who were looking, who soon arrived on their ATVs to help out. I backed away a hundred yards or so to wait to see which direction the cows would run, in case I needed to help muster them in the right direction. After a "thumbs-up" from the farmer, we left, with a big grin on our faces.

Ron - Great fun - I think he owes you a steer for a summer STEER roast- can I come?
Doc James P Watson, '61-83 Brantly owner, flying vet, reported a near exact same story
in his recent bio.
